The Right Fit, Twice: From Career Move to Team Build-Out

When Matthew Mongolis first connected with Katalyst Group, it wasn’t the beginning of the relationship—it was a continuation of one built over time.

Across both interim and permanent opportunities, he had come to rely on the team not just for job openings, but for perspective—developing a level of trust that would later shape one of the most important decisions in his career.

That trust became especially important when Matt began exploring his next move: stepping from Assistant Controller into a Controller role. At that point, the decision wasn’t simply about advancement—it was about choosing the right environment to grow into leadership.

“For me, it’s always about location, culture, flexibility, and the role itself,” he said. “This was an opportunity to lead the accounting function and take that next step.”

Instead of one defining moment, it was a series of conversations that helped Matt think through the decision—what he was leaving, what he was gaining, and what would make the most sense for his next step.

At D4 Solutions, that decision quickly proved to be the right one.

He stepped into a team in transition, with a new CFO, new hires, and a shared opportunity to rethink how the accounting function operated.

“It’s a newer environment,” he explained. “There’s a real mindset around improving processes and growing the business. The people are on board with making things better—and we have the opportunity to build the culture we want.”

From Making the Move to Building the Team

Not long after, Matt’s role evolved again—this time from candidate to hiring manager.

Now responsible for building out his own team, he returned to Katalyst Group with a different perspective but the same goal: finding the right fit, not just filling a role.

“I trust their work,” he said. “They understand what we’re looking for—both technically and from a team fit perspective. They know the roles in accounting and finance, so they can filter candidates in a meaningful way.”

As the search unfolded, priorities shifted—as they often do in a growing organization. What the team needed evolved in real time, requiring flexibility, recalibration, and ongoing communication.

“Sometimes what you’re looking for changes,” Matt said. “Being able to communicate that and adjust along the way was key to finding the right person.”

That process led to the successful placement of a senior accountant with a well-rounded background—someone able to contribute across core accounting functions while supporting a team still taking shape.

Today, as Matt continues to build and refine his team, he sees Katalyst Group as more than a recruiting partner—they’re a trusted extension of the process and the organization’s brand.

“It’s knowing they’re working toward the same goal—finding the best people you truly want to work with,” he said. “That trust and open communication make all the difference.”
